What is Sleep Apnea?

Your Oral Airway Health (OAH) is extremely important. The continued decrease of oxygen levels can lead to serious cardiovascular problems as well as daily excessive exhaustion, depression, and concentration issues.

Oral Sleep Apnea (OSA) – A serious sleeping disorder in which a person’s breathing is disrupted while sleeping. If not treated, sleep apnea can cause health issues such as hypertension, heart failure, diabetes, and more. Sleep-related breathing disorders include many diagnoses such as snoring, hypopnea, upper airway resistance syndrome, central sleep apnea, and obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – A condition in which people suffer from disrupted sleep and low blood oxygen levels. Obstructive sleep apnea makes up 80% of sleep apnea cases. When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the tongue blocks the back of the throat, invading and stopping the upper airway airflow. Once the oxygen level in the brain becomes low enough, it will wake the sleeper up to clear the throat and allow airflow once again. This clearing of the throat for airflow often sounds like a loud gasp.

A Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD) can help reposition the airway of those who suffer from mild to more moderate sleep apnea. Our Carmel River Dentistry team works with our patient’s sleep physicians as supportive therapy for those who cannot use CPAP machines yet are willing to try oral sleep apnea appliances.

TMJ Disorders & Sleep Apnea

The position of your jaw has a significant impact on your airway passages, which is why TMJ disorders sometimes contribute to sleep apnea. The Carmel River Dentistry team can provide oral appliances to help address sleep apnea as well as any TMJ disorders in the form of bite splines (occlusal guards).
